To support our critical gaming infrastructure, a Manager in the Systems Engineering team helps drives the development and successful execution of high-level strategy and objectives for EA’s global systems engineering infrastructure workloads. As a leader in the EA Technical Operations (EA TechOps) group, this position is responsible for enabling EA's success within the Digital Platform and online gaming environments.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Manage team of engineers who provide Tier 2 and 3 systems engineering and infrastructure services within a 24x7 multi-tenant online environment.
  • Building, coaching and mentoring a team to deliver planned projects, while being effective at responding to unplanned events
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, coaching, career development and feedback for performance management. Promote staff development, recruiting and retention.
  • Drive automation and continuous improvements through process and automation technologies like “Infrastructure as Code” across the eco-system.
  • Overseeing Systems Engineering operational readiness for our games to ensure successful launch and entertain our players without interruptions.
  • Continuously evaluate emerging systems technologies for inclusion within the TechOps portfolio of products and services.
  • Design, deploy, and leverage monitoring and capacity tooling/processes to proactively monitor and alert on systems performance
  • Partner with vendors to implement product solution improvements for reliability, availability, and serviceability.

The systems we support are incredibly diverse, produced by dozens of teams from around the world. Accordingly, the ideal candidate will have a diverse knowledge base and will be eager to expand it. You will be managing engineers armed with a large part, if not all of the following skills, and if they don’t have it, you’ll be expected to get them there. A working knowledge of the following are huge pluses:

  • Systems Administration: a strong understanding of *nix is mandatory. Familiarity with both RHEL and Debian family distros is preferred (MS Windows is a plus). Strong skill with ad-hoc scripting a plus. Understanding of core services like DNS, DHCP, LDAP, logging, etc.
  • Networking: a strong understanding of networking basics is mandatory. Switching/routing, VPNs, load balancing, proxying, network virtualization, firewall basics (especially iptables) and general netsec best practices.
  • Programming Languages: experience with Ruby and Python is preferred. Ability to dive into the code during triage or while trying to understand behavior is a must. Familiarity with C/C++, Go, Java, and Scala is desirable.
  • Automation: experience with configuration management and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools is a must. Chef (preferred), Puppet, Terraform (preferred), Packer, CloudFormation, etc.
  • Distributed Systems: a strong understanding of distributed systems is highly preferred. An understanding of techniques for high availability (application and storage), service discovery, secrets management, etc.
  • Virtualization, Cloud Computing, Containerization,: AWS (preferred), GCP, Azure, VMWare ecosystem (Orchestration like Kubernetes, Docker, Vagrant, etc. is a plus)

Your Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Information Systems, equivalent degree or relevant work experience
  • Experience with Agile methodologies using Scrum, Kanban or Lean.
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of
    • relevant experience in building and people managing engineering teams with an operational focus.
    • systems architecture design and management experience.
    • systems engineering experience within Unix\Linux environments.

We prefer applicants with:

  • Strong understanding of DevOps and SRE.
  • A solid understanding of IT Service Management and how to efficiently work with Change, Incident and Problem Management in a large distributed Operations organization.
  • Documented success in mentoring and performance-managing direct reports
  • Natural communication skills to both capture and convey messages in text, presentations and by the coffee machine.
  • Ability to function effectively under pressure in environments of rapid change, conflicting demands and crisis management.
  • Occasional travel (domestic or international)
