Maxis is looking for a talented individual to be a part of the creative team working on The Sims 4. This opening requires that the candidate be motivated, possess excellent communication skills, and has the ability to work well with a cross-disciplinary group.  

The Environmental Artist is responsible for world building, terrain, and props for gameplay areas in The Sims 4. This artist is expected to collaborate with multiple disciplines including design, object modeling and VFX teams to bring their world to life. And will work directly with the Art Director to maintain visual style consistent with The Sims brand. This artist is also expected to create and texture 3D models including buildings, sets, and other environment objects. This artist will need to work in a fast-paced development environment and should be familiar with development processes and best practices of a major game studio. The ideal candidate has previous world building experience, is receptive to feedback, and can produce high quality art with consistency and efficiency.


Major responsibilities include: 

  • Work with Art Directors to gather references and visually concept new environments.
  • Create and debug environments in The Sims 4 while maintaining technical performance standards.
  • Model and texture high quality environment assets.
  • Set up gameplay elements including seasonal layers, roads, pathing, etc.
  • Work with multiple development disciplines, including non-art specific groups, to assess and improve environments.
  • Maintain technical and aesthetical coherence with the Sims brand. 


Skills and Experience: 

  • 2+ years of environment, world, or level artist experience.
  • At least 1 shipped title in the role of environmental artist or equivalent on PC or major console platform.
  • Strong sense of environment aesthetics, interest in architecture and nature.
  • A solid knowledge base in art and design history.
  • Extensive knowledge and proficiency in Maya, Zbrush, and Photoshop 
  • Expertise with up to date art production techniques. 
  • Excellent artistic skills and experience sharing that knowledge through mentoring, critiques, and tutorials. 
  • Pro-actively seeks art direction and cooperation with other team members. 
  • Solid time management & communication skills. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, solid organization and efficient time management. Takes direction and seeks clarification when necessary. 
  • Self-motivated, able to collaborate with other game team leads in a deadline driven environment.

 

Nice to have: 

  • Previous experience with Substance Painter.
  • Game or level design experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with The Sims.
