The Challenge Ahead:

Is to build our new cross-game, cross-platform digital economy platform. This large-scale, always-on collection of RESTful services will power the virtual-economies of EA’s network of games that will be experienced by tens of millions of monthly active users. You'll have the opportunity to build sophisticated platform capabilities handling several hundred-thousand requests per second, and driving the player engagement of many of the industry’s most popular titles. You'll be able to build server-side systems that deliver new functionality within the larger Digital Platform, as well as work on regular improvements to the systems to keep them at a top-notch performance. 

What a Software Engineer II does within EADP Marketplace Division at EA:

As a Software Engineer II, your primary responsibility will be to work collaboratively with a team of engineers to plan and execute on the software design and architecture of our new systems.  Most of your time will be spent developing features and optimizing performance, robustness, and scalability of server systems. You will also spend time working with product managers to innovate new features to support EA's many games and reduce technical debt associated with legacy systems through innovation and automation.  Additionally, you will be a champion for best practices within the engineering team.  

Your Work with Us

Your day to day is a healthy mix of coding, code reviews, and discussions about design and implementation.  Your work will meet the quality bars and coding styles all meant to keep MTTR low, debugging easy and bugs in check.  Ensuring performance remains high is critical and so your code once merged will be loaded test within 7 days.  Likewise, the code will reach our internal customers in this same time frame and you can measure and monitor how your changes are working.

In the hands of integrators, you ensure defects are addressed and conversations happen around usability, stability all the while working towards bettering the.  Production deployment is close on heels of the integrators adoptions and so the support of your work extends as it makes its way on a release.  As a live service, there is an occasional need to support your work off hours making for a world-class experience for our gamers and our internal integrator customers.

As more new features come in or we look to enhance our technology stack, you will look at how to design, implement and test the solutions so that they fit well into our big picture via collaborative brainstorming with your peers.  All the while extending a helping hand to share your knowledge and expertise throughout the team.

Your Experience

You are a software engineer because you have a passion for engineering and programming.  Different programming languages give you different joys where you are proficient in Java but can easily pick up new and similar languages.  Years of work experience guides you and helps you use your prior learnings in meaningful ways.

Backend RESTful HTTP based services are fun and engaging.  Using your related work experience, you know to write secure and performant code out of the box which you also know how to measure and monitor its success.  Doing this in the cloud as SaaS applications using caching is similar to your past work and you enjoy enhancing the services in this area.  Understanding commonly available technology stacks such as Redis, SQL, Kibana, Logstash, Queuing technologies, AWS related offerings and more all to keep us moving forward.

Testing is in your normal workflow.  You value writing tests and encourage it amongst your peers.  Testing goes beyond just clear box JUnit style tests where load testing comes into play.  You want to know you’re your changes affect the overall product and being fiscally responsible is important.  Above all, you own your work all the way till it is in the live site and you can see it working successfully with metrics and monitoring.
