Position Title: Senior Technical Artist

External Description:

EA Worldwide Studios Content is looking for a Technical Artist for The Capture Lab, in its Los Angeles facility near the Respawn Entertainment Studio. The successful candidate will have strong technical experience within the entertainment motion capture industry, and experience with image-based scanning technologies a prerequisite. As a Technical Artist, you will work together with the Motion Capture Specialists to prioritize and troubleshoot technical issues.

The successful candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of large optical motion capture systems (36+ camera installations) and will have hands-on experience with image-based scanning systems. 

The knowledge of motion capture system configurations (volume setup, data flow, camera aiming/focusing), stage calibrations, data acquisition, and the associated post-processing of collected optical data cleanup is required, and a deep understanding of DSLR synchronization, associated lighting configurations and digital asset management is essential.

The Technical Artist will provide technical insight and will support other Subject Matter Experts within The Capture Lab while attending meetings, and discussions about upcoming motion capture and scanning sessions.

The role requires the ability to adapt to custom toolsets and workflows; to maintain the highest data quality and throughput, The Capture Lab maintains many custom solutions for all aspects of its motion capture and scanning processes.

As a Technical Artist, you will regularly collaborate with the motion capture and scanning specialists within The Capture Lab to investigate and implement solutions for project-wide technical problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the technical maintenance of a large optical motion capture installation.
  • Support motion capture specialists within The Capture Lab to troubleshoot and resolve technical motion capture system issues.
  • Responsible for the technical maintenance of image-based scanning systems, including DLSR sync, Machine Vision Camera and lighting.
  • Support motion capture specialists within The Capture Lab to troubleshoot and resolve technical scanning system issues.
  • Represent a technical opinion and provide technical insight while attending meetings with other Subject Matter Experts within The Capture Lab.
  • Collaborate with other Technical Artists within The Capture Lab to implement solutions to help support data processing needs.
  • Create and maintain technical documents which include setup, usage, troubleshooting, and maintenance guides.

Who you are:

  • At least 5 years’ experience in the entertainment motion capture industry, working hands-on with high volume data acquisitions.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working with industry standard motion capture applications (Vicon Shogun/Blade, Autodesk MotionBuilder, etc.).
  • Substantial experience troubleshooting large-scale motion capture systems and configurations.
  • At least 5 years’ experience acquiring data with image-based scanning systems, such as DSLR photometrics.
  • Scripting experience with a high-level interpreted scripting language is preferred (Python, Mel, etc.).
  • Experience with record keeping database systems preferred (Shotgun, MySQL, etc.).
  • The ability to work under the pressures of a production environment during live capture sessions.
  • Effective and clear communication skills.
