Gameplay Technical Animator
What a gameplay technical animator does at Criterion:
A gameplay technical animator is responsible for setting up features in our proprietary animation system. They will work closely with other animators, programmers and designers to bring a feature to the highest level of quality.
A gameplay technical animator will be responsible for the following:
- Create and maintain state machines with a focus on simplicity and accessibility.
- Identify the type and number of animations needed for a feature.
- Set up animations for in-game use (placing tags, putting animations in the right databases, etc.)
- Find the cause and best solution for game bugs.
- Implement procedural animation techniques, like foot-planting and hand IKs.
- Ensure that their features fit well with other features and the overall animation design.
A gameplay technical animator will need the following :
- Experience with animation state machines
- A background in animation
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Attention to details and conventions
Other useful qualities and skills:
- Familiarity with animation software, like Maya or MotionBuilder.
- Familiarity with programming (like python) or visual scripting (like Unreal Blueprints)
