Senior Backend Software Engineer - New Game

We exist to inspire the world to play and we’re looking for the right people to make that happen. You'll be developing a new mobile title for EA. As a studio, we build games for Imaginative Creators which allow players to create something that is an expression of their unique personality.

You'll be reporting into the New Game’s Server Technical Director and collaborating with designers, producers, and client engineers from prototyping through to live operations for important game backend features. Most of your work will be completed in Typescript with Node.js and deployed to Kubernetes in the Google Cloud Platform.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop responsive, resilient, massively scalable, cross-team shareable and globally available web services that support millions of players
  • Creatively blend security best practices and original techniques to keep user data secure and prevent cheating
  • Apply and improve service deployment and troubleshooting strategies that maximize uptime
  • Design and implement complex systems, sub-systems and APIs\protocols that are consistent, formalized, and testable
  • Demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills under iteratively changing requirements 
  • Troubleshoot complex, low reproduction issues during development and when live
  • Author and review technical design documents and API specifications detailing software requirements
  • Maintain a suite of automated test framework that validates the correctness of backend services
  • Share best practices and features through mentoring and contributions to the central tech stack
  • Learn from other Senior Software Engineers and industry experts to create robust architectures and implementations
  • Assess risks and dependencies across the entire server stack

Qualifications:

  • You have a Bachelor/Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field.
  • 8+ years of job experience in a hands-on coding role
  • You own large systems, subsystems and features from design to deployment, including live service support, which are generalized and cross-team shareable when appropriate
  • You develop high-quality, testable software
  • You have a desire to work with client engineers, designers, leads and cross-team folks to iteratively add new features and integrate existing features and improve APIs
  • You develop product APIs that release new updates with zero downtime strategies and tools
  • You have load testing, troubleshooting, and optimizing performance experience for web services
  • You work on software that requires developing and optimizing queries and database access patterns for object and relational databases

Bonus:

  • You've developed services that support mobile applications
  • You have games industry experience
  • You've built software with Typescript
  • You've shipped services using Node.js
  • You've worked on large teams using version control tools like git
  • You have experience with Google Cloud Platform, including Google Kubernetes Engine, or Google Cloud Spanner
  • You have experience with distributed streaming technologies like Kafka
  • You’re familiar with pub/sub and distributed caching like Redis
  • You've deployed and shipped cloud-hosted data-driven web services that scale to millions of daily users using Kubernetes and containerization
  • You have React programming experience

BC COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The base salary ranges listed below are for the defined geographic market pay zones in these locations. If you reside outside of these locations, a recruiter will advise on the base salary range and benefits for your specific location.

EA has listed the base salary ranges it in good faith expects to pay applicants for this role in the locations listed, as of the time of this posting. Salary offered will be determined based on numerous relevant business and candidate factors including, for example, education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and business or organizational needs.

BASE SALARY RANGES

• British Columbia (depending on location e.g. Vancouver vs. Victoria):
º $114,050 - $185,250 CAN Annually

Base salary is just one part of the overall compensation at EA. We also offer a package of benefits including vacation (3 weeks per year to start), 10 days per year of sick time, paid top-up to EI/QPIP benefits up to 100% of base salary when you welcome a new child (12 weeks for maternity, and 4 weeks for parental/adoption leave), extended health/dental/vision coverage, life insurance, disability insurance, retirement plan to regular full-time employees. Certain roles may also be eligible for bonus and equity.
