Respawn Entertainment is a AAA video game development studio that aspires to create new hit games that leave a lasting impact for gamers worldwide. Our work includes the critically acclaimed multi-platform games Apex Legends and Titanfall franchise. We developed the Star Wars™ action-adventure game Jedi: Fallen Order and virtual reality game Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, and we are continuing development for our live free-to-play game, Apex Legends.

We are seeking a Lead Character Artist with the passion and know-how to drive the creation of the galaxy’s most diverse characters and creatures. As the Lead Character Artist on our Star Wars FPS team, you will establish and maintain our character creation process and play a pivotal role in developing character-centric game features. Respawn embraces a highly collaborative and iterative development process, so this role will involve working heavily with a variety of other departments and feature teams. The ideal candidate is a blend of excellent artist, effective manager, and understands the technical requirements and demands of a modern AAA character pipeline. This position is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor, build a team, and execute your vision for building the best looking Star Wars characters possible.

What you’ll do…

  • Work closely with the Art Director and Concept Art to drive the creation of high quality character meshes, textures, and materials.
  • Establish process, standards, documentation, and training.
  • Ensure that character art assets are built to high technical and efficiency standards.
  • Task and manage a large team, both internally and with external partners.
  • Collaborate with Production to organize, schedule, and manage the character art team's daily activities.
  • Partner with Engineering and Technical Art to build and improve the character art pipeline.
  • Troubleshoot a wide variety of issues in DCC tools and in game.

Ideally you’ll have…

  • Experience shipping at least two AAA games and actively contributing in all phases of development, preferably in a leadership role.
  • A strong understanding of prototyping mindset and strategy.
  • Excellent understanding of anatomy, proportion and silhouette.
  • Experience with facial animation, FACS, photogrammetry or blendshape acquisition.
  • Mastery of modern asset generation techniques in industry standard DCC tools. (Maya/Max, Zbrush, Substance, etc.)
  • Expert knowledge of physically based rendering and authoring photoreal assets.
  • A solid understanding of rigging, skinning, LOD creation, budgets, and other technical requirements of building optimized content.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience managing and collaborating with a team working remotely.
  • Extensive experience collaborating with other departments, artists, designers, and programmers.
