Job Description

We are looking for a Maya-based 3d generalist with strong character animation work and experience in Unreal (or similar) game engine to join our Marketing Communication team on a contract basis, on-site in Redwood City.

You will produce Cinematic and Static work, both within game engines and pre-rendered in Maya. Prime examples include Game Trailers and Key Art, in addition to supporting Marketing Art. You should submit a portfolio demonstrating character animation skills, as the job is largely on character-focused work.We are looking for a storyteller, able to clearly communicate a feeling or situation in one frame, while staying true to the essence of our games.

Responsibilities:

  • Create static renders for marketing communications and internal projects
  • Create and edit animations for game trailers
  • Create concept art through 3d character posing, and built sets using game assets
  • Render animation and static images in both Maya and Game Engine(s)
  • Report to Cinematics Lead

The next great 3d Animator/Generalist needs:

  • Flexibility! You should be comfortable moving between projects with fluidity, as our team is always working on multiple game titles
  • Organization! You can stay on task and navigate different pipelines, naming conventions, etc, while bouncing around between several projects. You will be working primarily with a Lead Artist, but will also likely find yourself communicating with several different Art/Creative Directors and Producers. Balancing your bandwidth is very important!
  • Communication! Ask questions when direction is unclear, communicate estimated delivery on work, especially when it looks as though it will be later than expected. Make sure you have what you need to work and that people know if you don't.
  • Problem-solving! You look for creative solutions and clever shortcuts. When you have some downtime, you do r&d and think about how to eliminate issues you had to slog through on previous projects.
  • Balance! Know how to balance speed and quality. We work with tight deadlines and don't always have time for polish. Can you create quality shots even with minimal time and resources?
  • Maya skills! You know and love Maya, or at least know it like you love it. All of our titles and proprietary Cinematic pipeline uses Maya, this is a must!
  • Animation skills! You have a strong focus on character work, especially in animation and rigging. We need someone who can animate on a highly stylized title one day, and troubleshoot a realistic rig the next.
  • An Animation portfolio! Supply a portfolio demonstrating strong character animation work to apply! Most of your work will involve characters in some capacity, animation skills are preferred to being a well-rounded generalist.
  • Well roundedness! You are a bit of a Jill/Jack/J of all trades! You feel reasonably comfortable in just about every area of 3d art production. You can upres a low-res game texture, model a simple prop, light a scene,, tweak/troubleshoot game rigs, animate, clean up animation, etc. We need someone who can handle a variety of tasks. You don’t need to be an expert in everything, you won’t build rigs from scratch or even maintaining them, but ideally you have enough knowledge to troubleshoot small problems on your own.
  • Unreal (or similar) engine experience! Or have similar game engine experience. You can find your way around game engine architecture and the development tools related to Cinematic production, such as tweaking lights, editing shaders, camera work, etc.
  • Passion! You like making cool stuff! The job can be hectic, we want to keep alive a spirit of fun, exploration, and play for our work, and for ourselves.
  • Openness! You love diversity, of ideas and, more importantly, people. You'll work with a team from many different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders/gender-identities, etc, and getting more diverse by the day. We see this as a huge plus, you should too!

Skills:

  • Maya
  • 3d Generalist (modeling, texturing, lighting, rendering)
  • Animation
  • Rigging
  • Photoshop
  • Unreal (or similar game engine experience)
  • Communication
  • Self-Organization
  • Independent/interdependent as needed.
  • 3-5 years industry experience working on shipped titles (games, film tv series, etc)
