Senior Technical Designer

Role Overview

This design position oversees game design features attached to our Maxis titles from a technical level. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the designer will maintain and balance the core and meta-game while creating, prototyping and implementing gameplay features.  This position also acts as a technical reference for our team members, assisting, supporting, and advising colleagues whenever necessary.  The Senior Technical designer may also be called upon as one of the project’s technical experts on a specific game element. The Technical Designer also possesses the ability to collaborate with a wide-range of development team members outside of their direct discipline such as Directors, Artists, Animators, and Programmers to define and implement the desired tools, processes and game play efficiently and at a high level of quality in a fast-paced environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support the game vision as set by the Creative Director and Product Owner.
  • Create engaging designs and prototypes while maintaining Maxis’ high standard of quality.
  • Maintain all design aspects of a game-as-service through entire project life cycle.

  • Balance game with consideration to fun gameplay, player acquisition, and engagement.
  • Retain Maxis’ core brand values and game experience in the service.
  • Inspire game team through progressive, creative design.
  • Use knowledge of scripting to set up content within the game engine.
  • Provide and receive critique in a constructive manner with suggestions and solutions for improvement.
  • Remain current on industry trends including: new game genres, new game design methods, and new platforms.

What Does EA Look For

  • 5+ year’s industry experience specifically in technical design, scripting, or level design.
  • Familiarity with C/C++ or similar languages.
  • Proven ability to conceptualize, create and implement game concepts using several tools.
  • Analyze and brainstorm content implementation.
  • Will need to understand the consumer and how to craft compelling experiences.
  • Excellent creative, proven ability to write detailed design documentation throughout project life cycle.
  • Understand gameplay theories and interface design ability.
  • Experience with visual scripting languages, programming training or engineering background a plus.
  • Experience in Unreal is also a plus.
