Position Title: Technical Director II

What a Studio Technical Director does within Pogo:

 

As a Studio Technical Director, your primary responsibility will be to lead a team of engineers, across various locations, in design, architecting, building and operating Pogo platform, HTML5 games on Pogo platform and metagame of Pogo.  Most of your time will be spent working with and leading the team in the design and execution of new features, while continually optimizing performance, robustness, and scalability of the service. You will also spend time working with the cross functional team of product managers, development directors, creative team and operations to contribute to the definition of Pogo’s vision and strategy.   As a people manager you will be responsible for helping shape people’s careers and mentor the team in growing and reaching their full potential. Responsibilities:

  • Build a world class online services team. Grow and guide your team members.
  • Still be close to technology – frameworks, languages, able to review & provide feedback on design, code and recommend technologies for solutions
  • Lead the technical design and architecture of Pogo service including major components of our large scale distributed HTTP based backend service, creating new features and updating existing ones
  • Provide guidance to the game teams via best practices, policies and standards while helping define the contract between games and Pogo platform (SDK for internal and external game developers).
  • Working with cross functional Pogo Leadership Team to define the roadmap of Pogo and delivering on their highest priority features and requirements.
  • Collaborate with external game developers and EA’s central services.
  • Continuously devise and improve on efficient, performant and reliable ways to develop, test and support a live service.
  • Set technical direction to innovate and improve on legacy systems.
  • Manage local and remote teams (in Shanghai).

 

Required Skills / Experience

  • Technical leadership, and/or mentoring experience.
  • Superb ability to take high level direction, work through ambiguity and drive to execution in a live service model
  • Strong understanding of the Software design/architecture process, preferably
  • Deep knowledge of object oriented software (preferably in Java)
  • Extensive experience working on online services (HTTP via REST) at Internet consumer scale
  • Strong understanding of DevOps, Continuous Delivery, and Agile development
  • Experience with cross-platform web(preferably)/native applications catering to desktop, mobile and tablet.
  • Experience developing, maintaining, and innovating on large distributed applications. You understand how to design service monitoring and how to load test properly.
  • Experience with game development
  • Experience working with and managing remote teams
  • Superb communication skills: Demonstrated ability to explain technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • 12+ of relevant software development
  • 6+ or more years’ experience managing and leading teams of engineers.

 

Nice to have Skills:

  • Experience building on Amazon Web Services
  • Experience with leading web client technologies – Single page architecture and  progressive web apps
  • Experience with mobile development, familiarity with best practices
  • Understanding of browser as platform.
  • Use of technologies such as memcached or Redis, queuing, and NoSQL in production systems helps as does deployment automation experience, e.g. Terraform.
  • Domain experience in publishing games, social gaming experience
