Position Title: Sr QA Manager

External Description:

Come and join the Quality Verification (QV) team at EA to work with the world's best game development teams in a challenging yet fun and creative environment. In this role, you will be responsible for the QV teams’ strategies for EA Mobile’s Casual group covering studios in Seattle, California, Shanghai and Hyderabad. The Casual portfolio contains a mix of products in development, active live services, live maintenance across both Mobile and browser platforms. You will partner with the Casual executive team to align on business development priorities and be an active member of the QV senior leadership to implement the organization’s strategic vision.

You should be an excellent communicator equally capable of inspiring your team and reports to take on the aspirational goals for the team and presenting detailed, logical cases for a strategic investment or introduction of a new quality-based process. You are a highly accomplished servant leader of your reports creating quality goals and development plans and enabling their professional growth.

You will balance financial management with quality and development process expertise to ensure your teams are creating tactically astute budgets and progressive quality strategies with aligned and actionable KPIs, optimized partner collaboration and detailed reporting

You are dynamic, enthusiastic and can collaborate successfully across all development and QV domains to build and maintain productive relationships and communication channels.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Contributes to and embodies EA and QA organizational strategies, instilling shared values and focus areas within their teams. Guide and inspire the team, acting as a translator of high level, long term vision and strategy into concrete direction and action plans for the team, highlighting relevance and benefits to their team members at all levels
  • Creates productive working relationships with other discipline leaders within the studio to increase goal alignment and represent their team to studio leadership
  • Identifies and implements process improvements: evolves, optimizes, and defines project-wide processes across multiple projects and studios proactively
  • Communicates within studios and to external groups adapting content and detail to match audience, regularly collaborating outside of QV to solve problems and share best practices
  • Builds effective teams by inspiring, motivating, and energizing: creates an effective organizational structure driving the creation and consolidation of a strong team culture focused on pioneering quality, and boosting team members passion, creativity, determination, teamwork and learning every single day.
  • Leads other managers: leads and mentors sub-teams through other managers, anticipates skill gaps and organizational needs for teams, mentors and cultivates QA managers within studios
  • Act as a role model for managers in their team, coaching them and driving effective 1:1 and team conversations and actions on goals, performance and development, at individual and team level, maximizing opportunities for team members success, recognizing and rewarding outstanding results, and making tough decisions as needed, always striving to build a high performance team and developing capabilities for the future.

 

Execution:

  • Responsible for project planning across multiple franchises or an entire business unit.
  • Develops and reviews project plan for multiple projects.
  • Leads the retrospective learning process on projects and establishes best practices for future projects. Drives learning from mistakes.
  • Partners with team leadership to create effective and complete full-project (or very significant pieces of very large projects) strategies. 
  • Gathers operational data to create strategic plans to drive large team performance improvements in areas such as efficiency, cost, quality, etc.
  • Uses tools and techniques such as SWOT analysis, affinity maps, balanced scorecards, etc. in their strategic planning process.
  • Executes and drives all or parts of a strategic initiative that directly affects their team.
  • Creates and updates resource capacity planning for multiple projects/franchise resources (internal, centralized and distributed development resources.)
  • Manages project resources: ensures planned capacity will deliver project on time, quality, and budget; assesses skills requirements for current project and next; recognizes latent internal talent to develop into stretch roles and work with direct managers to create and execute effective action plans to transform potential into reality.
  • Directs team and managers to completion, modifying project plans as necessary; communicates project plan and progress to team and above
  • Manages risk proactively and formally: solves root problems over multiple products; solves chronic problems by implementing corrective action plans; responsible for risk assessment and mitigation strategy

 

Business Management:

  • Effectively manage change through their team to ensure alignment of culture, values, people and behavior
  • Ensures project meets financial objectives: ensures QA time estimates and basic cost information are collected and accurate; monitors progress against assigned budgets; follows defined financial plan
  • Liaises on external issues requiring attention, helps set priorities and directs partners.
  • Contributes with industry, quality discipline and management knowledge and insight into capabilities – people, technology, and partners.

 

Quality Management:

  • Emphasizes quality results, not just task completion
  • Provides options and makes decisions around the balance between quality, time, and cost
  • Pushes for efficiencies, helps establish quality goals, drives the quality goal to completion

 

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Exceptional communicator with strong people management skills and an ability to challenge and develop talent
  • Extensive experience with the SDLC and particularly the Agile software development practices
  • 7+ years software industry experience, ideally within Mobile and/or Live Service
  • 4+ years in a leadership position, ideally managing managers and at least one leadership position in the games industry
  • Thorough understanding of project management methodology with PMP certification a plus
  • Highly accomplished with software testing products for example: JIRA, Hansoft, Perforce
  • Prior implementation and utilization of automation and data to optimize software testing 
  • Capable of identifying and recruiting key talent based on staffing requirements; solid understanding of candidate hiring practices including interviewing techniques
  • Self-motivated, strong work ethic
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office Product Suite
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
