The Challenge Ahead:

Is to enable social capabilities within our games. We believe that fundamentally people want to experience and play games with others, and that games are more fun when experienced as part of a team. We want to make it easy for players to find other players they already know as well as create new relationships with people they’ve only just begun to interact with inside a game. We aim to build better recommenders for a variety of different games to recommend people to teams, friends to people, and opponents. We want to incentivize users to engage socially and create a sense of community.

You will get to build our new cross-game, cross-platform and always on Social platform. This large scale, collections of RESTful services will power the Social relationships, interactions of EA’s network of games and capturing information that will be experienced by tens of millions of monthly active users. You'll have the opportunity to build sophisticated platform capabilities handling several hundred-thousand requests per second, and driving the player engagement of many of the industries most popular titles. You'll be able to build server-side systems that deliver new functionality within the larger Digital Platform, as well as work on regular improvements to the systems to keep them at top notch performance.

What a Senior Software Engineer does within EADP Social Division at EA:

As a Senior Software Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to lead the software design and architecture process of our new systems.  Most of your time will be spent developing features and optimizing performance, robustness, and scalability of server systems. You will also collaborate with a team of engineers to plan and execute on the software design and architecture of our new systems. You will also spend time working with product managers to innovate new features to support EA's games and reduce technical debt associated with legacy systems through innovation and automation.  Additionally, you will be a champion for best practices within the engineering team.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Roughly 75% of your time will be coding.
  • Create and work on large scale distributed HTTP/TCP/GRPC based backend service creating new features and updating existing ones
  • Resolve defects during QA testing, preproduction, production and from the live environment
  • Work with multiple clients working on multiple different platforms who use the services and features you create to complete user facing features
  • Architect and design large portions of the software from features to entire applications
  • Grow and guide fellow engineers
  • Occasional off-hours support of the live environment helping to ensure our consumer experience is always world class

 

Required Skills / Experience:

  • A passion for working in platforms that supports gaming
  • 7 or more years’ experience developing object-oriented software (preferably in Java)
  • 4 or more years’ experience working on online services (HTTP via REST) at internet consumer scale
  • Experience working on high traffic services and highly scalable systems
  • Superb communication skills: Demonstrated ability to explain technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong understanding of the Software design/architecture process
  • Experience with source control systems like git.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps, Continuous Delivery, and Agile development

 

Nice to have Skills:

  • Experience building on Amazon Web Services
  • Experience with leading OSS technologies – Kafka, ElasticSearch, Cassandra, Docker, Kubernetes
  • Experience with Bamboo / Maven / Java 8/ RxJava/Akka
  • Use of technologies such as Memcached or Redis, queuing, and NoSQL in production systems helps as does deployment automation experience, e.g. Terraform.
  • Domain experience in enabling social services in other games or other verticals (e.g. building chat systems, activity feeds, and other core social feature areas, etc.)
