External Description:

The Team:

Artworks is a highly engaged content creation team within EA Studios.  We are creatively driven and focused on high end visual production across multiple genres and art styles.  Our art studios are in Vancouver, Orlando, Guildford, Gothenburg, and Shanghai.

Working directly with our game team partners we share a unified passion for creating amazing experiences, and industry leading visuals.

We are adventurous and creative.  We are courageous and we take chances.  We seek pioneers who cut new paths and conquer challenges with fierce determination.

We look for the best in everyone.

What the Lead Environment Artist will do at EA Vancouver:

As the Lead Environment Artist for NHL, it is your mission to deliver cutting edge stadiums, cinematic content, and outdoor environments – for the next generation of NHL titles.

Along with a proven ability to lead a team and deliver to production schedules, we are looking for a proactive team player with the passion to create best-in-class art content, and the drive to explore improved workflows and methods of execution.

With the landscape of art production rapidly evolving, a solid understanding of current and forward-looking production techniques, along with how and when to use them, is critical to this role. This includes: physically based materials, 3D paint (e.g. Substance Painter/Designer), high fidelity modeling techniques, photogrammetry, and content driven workflows.

We realize that having the opportunity to experiment is vital to progressing the way we work.  As a Lead Artist, along with your scheduled tasks, we would look to you as a role model for proactive problem solving, art prototyping, and targeted R+D.

Working directly with the Art Directors, Technical Leads, and Project Management, you will define the direction and strategy for delivering on all phases of Worlds content – accounting for: technical constraints, time, quality expectations, resources, and project scope. As such, the ability to maintain big picture perspective, as well as laser-focused attention to detail, is a must.

As the Worlds Leads, we would also expect you to both inspire and mentor junior artists – instilling and maintaining a culture of excellence across the team.

This is an opportunity to be a key player in defining our future for art production and pushing the bar for visual excellence.

Responsibilities:

  • Directing and creating high quality benchmark World content for NHL, including in-game and cinematic assets/sets, using EA's Frostbite engine
  • Prototyping visuals, and driving opportunities for process improvement and evolving techniques
  • Collaborating with Art Directors, Art Leads, and Technical Leads to develop, define, and maintain best practices
  • Lead and inspire the Worlds Team – including full-time, contract, and external staff
  • Be an active role-model, driving your team to develop world class content
  • Provide mentorship and artistic guidance to all artists, at all levels
  • Collaborate with technical artists and engineers in developing and streamlining tools and processes – including opportunities for automation and procedural workflows
  • Document and communicate: direction, processes and workflows – ensuring they are consistently followed

What the Lead Environment Artist needs to have:

Leadership

  • Experience leading World Teams – either as a Lead Artist, or similar Senior position, on at least 1 AAA shipped game.
  • A thorough understanding of the entire game art production process, from concept through to final
  • Ability to navigate complex production challenges, providing solutions and options
  • Problem solving abilities, from both a visual and technical perspective
  • Ability to review other artists’ work with proficiency for providing clear direction and feedback
  • Proactive communication skills, with high degree of self-motivation and initiative
  • Ability to manage up as well as down
  • Ability to recognize and push quality in the most impactful areas, while always seeing the big picture, making effective decisions, and prioritizing optimal use of time and resources
  • Positive attitude with a passion to collaborate and desire to bring new ideas forward

Craft

  • Willingness to iterate, adapt and define new processes and workflows
  • Expert knowledge of Maya, Max, Modo, or similar 3D modeling software
  • Proficiency with ZBrush is desirable (for sculpting assets and textures)
  • Exceptional ability to create both organic and hard surface models
  • Knowledge of current and future-looking modeling techniques, along with high-poly to low-poly surface baking
  • Ability to create photorealistic surfaces using industry standard software (ideally Substance Painter/Designer)
  • Understanding of multi-layered shaders and ability to create node-based shader graphs is highly desirable
  • Experience using modular construction techniques, and using shader-driven parameters to create variations
  • Ability to convey a sense of ‘story’ in a scene or game asset – taking into account age, weathering, and context
  • Strong sense of scene composition with a superior eye for lighting, colour, and detail
  • An excellent understanding of physical materials and how to replicate them in CG
  • Experience working with content driven game engines (e.g. Unreal, Frostbite, Unity)
