The Challenge Ahead

 

As EA Partners’ Technical Director (TD) you’ll be responsible for working with partner external studios to bring their products to market with EA as publisher.  Across a variety of locations, you will work with studios of differing sizes and capabilities, using many different engines and covering many genres.  You’ll be involved in auditing the technical capabilities of potential partner studios and technical requirements and risks of their pitches; for the successful studio partners, you’ll be responsible for helping them deliver against their vision.  This includes identifying key skill and technology gaps, and helping partners fill these using a mixture of EA technology, contractors and/or mentoring the studio technical team.

 

Reporting to the GM EA Partners, the TD EA Partners will demonstrate a mix of strong technical and business leadership, the ability to influence and drive new business models forward, a creative thinker, pragmatic technical thinker, entrepreneur and a great sense of what makes high quality, casual and core game experiences.  The TD EA Partners will be able to assess concepts and have a sense for what will ultimately make a successful game experience.  Additionally, they will be required to successful partner and interact with EA production and operational planning, EA internal technical teams, publishing groups and be able to act as the connecting anchor point between these business units and the external partner studios.

 

What a Technical Director does at EA Partners:

 

EAP looks for extensive experience with all technology systems and pipelines.  The TD must be a great team player, with great technical skills as well as unflagging energy and focus. The TD must also have excellent oral and written communication skills.  They will have a degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) and have extensive demonstrable game programming experience. Most TDs have been a Lead or mentored a small engineering team. They have strong C++ programming skills, plus solid experience in low-level programming and debugging and in integrating complex systems.  They also have experience in using automated testing, unit testing, and Configuration Management processes.

 

  • The successful candidate must have excellent relationship building and collaborative skills and be able to act responsibly and diplomatically in any situation while representing EAP and EA interests.
  • Audit technical capability of partner studios, identifying key strengths and weaknesses.
  • Audit technical quality of all major project milestones, from pitch through to final.
  • Responsible for ensuring external studios are identifying and managing technical risk.
  • Technical point of contact for EA Central Technology Teams; working with them to ensure any technology requirements to support external studio, are delivered when needed.
  • Risk analysis and mitigation with EA central technology suppliers, and external studios.
  • Drive the teams to successful launch and ongoing support of live service components where applicable.
  • Flexibility to travel both domestically and internationally extensively and as required by the demands of the role.

 

An EA Partners Technical Director needs:

 

  • B.Sc. in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent training and professional experience
  • Extensive games industry experience, having shipped at least 2 cross-platform games to high quality.
  • Strong math skills including trigonometry, calculus and linear algebra.
  • Proficiency with C++.
  • Extensive experience with assembler, and scripting languages such as Python, Lua and C#.
  • Experience in object-oriented design and implementation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of good software engineering practices.
  • Strong domain experience in one or more of [AI, Rendering, Online, Audio], and good domain knowledge / experience in all other areas of game development.
  • Understanding of memory management, multiple processor use, and runtime optimization.
  • Constantly innovating on how to improve product quality as well as group productivity.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent proactive decision-making capabilities.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts, principles and solutions.
  • Ideally experience working with 3rd party game engines, i.e. UE4, Unity, PhyreEngine.
  • Experience working within both small (<20) and large game teams (>100).
  • Extensive industry contacts – developers, engines, contractors, etc.
