What does the Frostbite team do?

We develop the Frostbite engine, EA’s multi-platform game development engine. Working on Frostbite means bringing the engine to some of the most acclaimed franchises in the business such as Battlefield and FIFA. Frostbite uses its proprietary technical advantages to empower game creators to shape games and push the boundaries of what they can achieve.

Creating new technology in the gaming industry is not easy but it is increasingly the difference-maker between an evolutionary game and a revolutionary one. Here at Frostbite, we are setting the bar high and have a team of great engineers who are dedicated and willing to reach it to ship the next amazing game. We are located across North America (Vancouver, Edmonton, Orlando, Montreal) and Europe (Guildford, Stockholm, Bucharest).

What does the Foundation team do?

The Foundation team enables Frostbite and EA’s game teams to ship highly performant games across platforms by providing platform-abstraction technologies and offering guidance as platform experts in many different tech areas.

What does a Technical Director do?

Manages the architecture of their area and how that fits into the global Frostbite architecture. A strong voice in the product vision and translates this into a technical vision for the team. Accountable for the architecture and design of items in the product backlog. Works with the product manager to provide input and feedback on the prioritization of items on the backlog including technical debt, innovation, patent and publication opportunities.

Architecture & Solutions: Accountable for the architecture of stories, features, and initiatives in their area, including providing high-level cost estimates. Responsible for contributing to the architecture for cross-domain initiatives and objectives, including driving these if appropriate. Representation of domain in technical discussions at Frostbite leadership level and in the architecture group. Accountable for aligning solutions and designs in their area with the global Frostbite architecture, including global policies, principles, and NFRs. Ensures that the designs meet the needs negotiated with Product Management and can be implemented by the engineering team. Key contributors to program planning including items such as technical solutions, costing, technical trade-offs, technical debt evaluation, risk, and dependency identification.

Technical vision & innovation: Lead and conduct research/prototypes necessary to achieve desired outcomes and evolve our technology (following the priorities outlined by Product Management). Help the team prioritize and deliver patents. Represent FB at key industry events. Assist the Product Management team to identify business opportunities.

Coaching and growing the team, in partnership with Engineering Manager

The Technical Skills We’re Looking for:

  • Expert in the C++ language and various extensions such as STL
  • Expert Multithreaded programming and debugging experience
  • Command of OOP design patterns
  • Proven experience of designing complex software systems
  • Expert in multi-platform portability challenges, console, and other platforms 
  • Exposure to complete lifecycles of video game titles or game engine releases

The Collaboration and Process Skills We’re Looking for:

  • Experience working on large common codebases with contributions from multiple locations and teams
  • Great collaboration abilities to be able to work with different individuals and teams, to report progress and contribute to technical and planning discussions
  • Passion for good workflows and well-architected software
  • Passion for code testability; quality; and user and developer-level documentation
  • Versed in review processes, in delivering and acting on review feedback for code, design, and documentation
  • The ability to adapt quickly and effectively to change (i.e. project, team, business-level)
  • Proven ability of technical leadership and mentoring of more junior colleagues
  • Partner management and customer interaction experience
  • Experience of Agile (Scrum) and related software tools is a plus
  • Bonus: Experience developing and supporting middleware
