External Description:

We’re Criterion, and we love making games!

Over the last fifteen years we’ve entertained millions of players around the world with our award-winning games. From Burnout & Need for Speed to the critically acclaimed VR mission for Star Wars Battlefront and now Starfighter Assault on Battlefront ll, Criterion have always pushed the boundaries, delivering through technical excellence, world-class game feel and AAA audiovisual quality.

We place enormous value on creative collaboration, fresh ideas, and unique perspectives. Our studio is a healthy mix of industry veterans and newcomers working together to inspire, support, and educate one another. We encourage free experimentation, innovation and exploration very explicitly with regular “off-the-grid” time.

Criterion don’t put people in boxes. Folks here have freedom to navigate their careers the way their hearts take them – we’re not big on labels. Our features are built by teams who choose to work together, actively encouraging cross-discipline crack squads to solve the toughest problems.

The working day has space carved out for everyone to play games – by themselves or together, be they tabletop or videogames, we love them all. Learning from the widest range of experiences makes our own games better.

Over the years, we’ve learned that crunching is flat-out stupid, so we don’t do it.

The Challenge Ahead:

Criterion are embarking on their most ambitious projects to date, partnering with another EA Studio on an unannounced title and pushing the boundaries with our own brand new IP.

We are growing our team with fresh, talented people who can help us take a huge leap forwards.

We require a Lead Concept Artist who has strong fundamental art skills and the ability to visualise ideas, concepts and designs. You will be expected to contribute ideas and run with a loose description as well as collaborate with other disciplines across the wider studio.

What a Lead Concept Artist does at Criterion:

The Lead Concept Artist visualises environments, characters, vehicles, colour schemes and the overall mood and feel of the game. You should be comfortable creating rough sketches and happy to talk about the ideas in them. Also, you should be able to create industry leading final illustrations given the time.

The images you create should inspire the team or help them visualise ideas.  You will also work closely with your team and provide leadership, feedback and mentorship where applicable towards increasing quality and efficiency of concept art creation across the studio.

A Lead Concept Artist will need:

  • Strong ability to be able to produce a broad spectrum of concept work needed in a studio, everything from quick thumbnails through to final illustrations and renders.
  • Excellent people skills and the ability to inspire, motivate and develop a team
  • Strong, industry-leading understanding of colour theory, value structure, and lighting fundamentals with an application to both character and environment concept art.
  • Be as comfortable creating characters as they are painting environments.
  • Collaborate with Art Directors, Production Teams, Concept Artists and Content Leads.
  • Must have a passion for videogames and understand the challenges of creating great art in this environment.

A Lead Concept Artist’s portfolio should demonstrate the following:

  • Strong traditional art skills
  • Ideally two shipped AAA titles as a Lead Concept Artist
  • Thumbnails and finished illustrations
  • A strong understanding of industrial design describing function and form
  • A strong eye for composition
  • A strong ability to think in three dimensions
  • Great use of colour, light and shadow
  • A breadth of creative styles
  • A broad interest in aspects of visual art outside of video and computer games
  • A good grasp of concept development and the iterative design process
  • Great communication skills, a drive to improve everything and a motivation to make a difference is essential.

What’s in it for you? Glad you asked!

Naturally, we offer competitive compensation packages.

More importantly, because we love working with world-class creators, we maintain a culture that thrives on creative freedom and autonomy.
